2003 Monthly
Meetings
The regular monthly business meetings of the Sarasota
Orchid Society are held in the Activities Center on the grounds of the
beautiful Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. The Gardens are located at 811
South Palm Avenue in Sarasota, Florida. If you need directions to Selby
Gardens click
here for a map. On arrival at the Gardens, directional
signs will point you to the meeting facility. Meetings are held on the
first Monday of each month starting promptly at 7:30 P.M. Cultural classes
meet every other month at 6:30 P.M. Be sure to check the calendar below
for details. Visitors are always welcome to attend our cultural classes,
as well as the business meetings. Our meetings generally consist of a
business meeting, a judged “Show and Tell Table” displaying
plants grown by our members, a guest speaker or presentation, raffle
of beautiful orchid plants, and of course, refreshments. Please join
us…it’s lots of fun!

Robert "Bob" Scully
Bob is a second-generation horticulturist who began his experience in
plants at age six! Bob formerly operated the family business, Jones & Scully,
which was located in Homestead , Florida .the locale that was completely
devastated by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Now retired in Sarasota after
many years in commercial horticulture, specializing in orchids, Bob (along
with his wife, Susan) enjoys gardening and continues as an active volunteer
for Selby Gardens . Bob travels the orchid world frequently, mostly in
Asia, and still assists a number of mass producers in orchids. |

"Orchid Discoveries--Home and Abroad"
A slide presentation featuring some overseas
shows and highlighting entries that seemed particularly interesting
to Bob. The presentation will incorporate some pest and disease
diagnostics in full color.to help all of us avoid unpleasant
surprises during the winter season. |

Guest speaker: Marty Cooper
Marty’s subject will be “Orchids, the Big Picture”.
Marty is an active volunteer at Selby Gardens and is currently
on the Board of Trustees as Treasurer. He has been growing orchids
since 1984. After growing a variety of plants in greenhouses in
Chicago and New Jersey, he is currently concentrating on naturalizing
plants on the oaks in his yard.
Cultural Session: Jeff Higel, from Orchids Etcetera, will conduct
the session on “Getting Your Plants Ready for the Show.” Bring
any of your problem plants for discussion.
