Orchid Basics, 7:00 PM,   Jim Cope presenter. A series of short classes on orchid basics. The objective of these classes is to familiarize beginners with many of the characteristics of orchids, terminology associated with orchids, and the culture for plants that are most often found in hobbyist's collections . The class will begin at 7:00 PM in the Activities Center classroom.

Phelps Farm Orchids is a commercial orchid nursery, owned by Paul and Patricia Phelps, located on 5 acres in Tampa Florida. The greenhouse is 7000 sq. feet and the specialty of the house is Cattleya's, but many other genera such as Paphiopedilum, Phalaenopsis, Oncidium and Oncidinae intergenerics are grown there as well as other specialty and rare items.  The nursery was started in 1983.  At that time, the 3500 sq. feet of greenhouse contained orchids, foliage plants and hanging baskets. By 1987 most of the foliage plants and hanging baskets had disappeared and orchids had taken their place. In 1992, another 3500 sq. ft of greenhouse was added on, a laboratory was created and a hybridization program was initiated with the main focus being on the epidendreae group.

Jim Will present an "X-rated" program on the anatomy of the orchid flower.  He will distribute orchid flowers to the members in the audience to be dissected and examined to learn their secrets!

Gladys Fehling

Gladys and Ken Fehling lived in the Bahamas during most of the seventies and early eighties until they retired to Sarasota in January 1984. During those years in the Bahamas Gladys roamed Andros Island collecting orchids. She was started on collecting by Commander "Lucky" Smith, who was the base commander when they arrived on Andros . He told her how to apply for a permit to send orchids back to the States. They have made trips back to the Bahamas several times since they retired and always arranged to go collecting on each trip. Their last trip was in 1990. They have two greenhouses in their backyard and now enjoy growing their orchids right here in Sarasota.
